Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, has charged operators of medical facilities in the state to always adhere to regulations guiding the establishment of such facilities.

“Edo State is not a lawless state. For you to operate in the state there are regulations that you must abide by. Your place must be properly registered. Even after registration we come from time to time to monitor what you’re doing; if you’re still complying with what made the facility to be registered.

“Annually, you’re also licensed to practice. From what we have seen here(Union Diagnostics) there was no proof to show us registration. From our records we also saw that they have not being doing their due diligence as it regards to annual registration.”

Going further, he said: “I want to sound this to every health facility in the state – clinic, hospital, pharmacy, laboratory, mortuary etc – where they are operating without proper approval.”

Dr. Stanley Ehiarimwian, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, who represented the Commissioner, Dr. Samuel Alli, led a team of the ministry’s officials on a regulation and monitoring round of Benin metropolis.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the exercise was not a witchhunt “this operation is not targeted at anybody’s source of income. Our focus is on Edo people. We want Edo people to get the best of care. We want to be able to say confidently that the place where they get services with regards to health care.

“They have qualified personnel. They use the appropriate equipment and infrastructure. Everything is in line with what the regulation stipulates. Wherever that we find out that there is an infraction such places will be shut down.”

Facilities visited by the team included Union Diagnostics(sealed), Ethan Health Services, Ethan Medical Laboratory Ltd, Rhema Nursing and Maternity Home(sealed) and St. Mary Magdalene Hospital.
