Nigeria’s representatives in the 2024 CAF Women Champions League, Edo Queens FC, has scaled through to the semifinal of the competition.
The hard fighting Nigerian ladies beat the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa by 2-1 goals coming back from a goal down in the first half of the match and nailing the South African ladies with the two goals they scored in extra time of the memorable encounter.
Victory did not come easy for the Edo Queens as they even lost a penalty kick which could have fetched them the much needed equaliser midway into the second half when Captain Chioma Oliseh’s shot seemed to be a back pass which the South Africa goal tender stopped from entering her goal post.Â
Several other attempts by the Nigerians comprising Folashade Ijamilusi, Usani Miracle etal to score a goal met with stiff opposition by the defensively minded South Africans until two quick fire goals in added time brought jubilation to the Nigerian camp.
The icing on the cake for the Edo Queens was the award of the Woman of the Match trophy to Emem Essien.
