Breaking News: Oba of Benin stops planned solidarity protest over landgrabbing

The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare 11, has through the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) stopped the planned protest in solidarity with the Palace on issues of landgrabbing in Benin Kingdom.

It would be recalled that the Secretary of the BTC, Frank Irabor and some Benin chiefs are presently on remand in prison over issues of landgrabbing courtesy of the pronouncement of a magistrate court.

In solidarity with the Palace on the issue a group of Benin Socio Cultural Organisations had commenced announcement of a planned protest march slated for Monday, September 5th, 2022.

In stopping the protest a statement by Iguobaro Osaigbovo
Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Oba, said: “The attention of the Benin Traditional Council(BTC) has been drawn to a planned solidarity gathering by the Coalition of Social Cultural Organisations over the arrest and detention of the Secretary, Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor and some chiefs in Benin Kingdom.

“While the Palace appreciates their concern, let it be known that , the Palace of the Oba of Benin does not want such gathering at this time and consequently directs that the organisers of the gathering halt the exercise immediately.

“The issue in question that led to their arrest is being resolved. In this regard, nobody or group of persons should gather in the Oba of Benin Palace or anywhere in Benin Kingdom on Monday, 5th September, 2022.
