ADC and the recycling of political actors: Why credibility cannot be rebranded

By Comrade Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo (Mr Figo)

Nigeria is truly at a defining moment, and citizens are right to demand better leadership, better governance, and better outcomes. But in our search for a new political direction, honesty must come before sentiment. Any attempt to sell credibility to Nigerians must first pass the test of consistency and integrity—not clever rebranding.

One uncomfortable truth that must be confronted is this: many of those now projecting the ADC as a “credible pathway” are not new actors in Nigerian politics. They are individuals who have moved from one political party to another, contested elections, held elective offices, or benefited from political appointments within the very system they now describe as failed. Their sudden rediscovery of “principles” raises legitimate questions.

If Nigeria’s problems were caused solely by party labels, then party-hopping would have solved them long ago. But it hasn’t. This is because the challenge is not just parties—it is political behavior, leadership culture, and personal accountability. When the same actors move from platform to platform without taking responsibility for past roles, what changes in substance?

Credibility cannot be manufactured by changing party logos or issuing moral-sounding essays. It is built when leaders acknowledge their past, explain what they did with the power entrusted to them, and show evidence of learning and reform. Without this, the ADC risks becoming a refuge for political actors seeking moral cover rather than genuine renewal.

Nigeria does not suffer from a shortage of “new movements.” What it suffers from is the recycling of the same political elites under different banners, often presenting themselves as outsiders after years of insider privilege. Well-meaning Nigerians deserve more than recycled actors wearing the mask of reform.

The idea of accountability, which ADC claims as a core value, must begin with self-accountability. Those who once held office or appointments should first answer simple questions: What did you change? What did you deliver? What mistakes did you make? Without these answers, calls for a new political direction sound hollow.

True political renewal requires more than migration; it requires transformation. It requires leaders who are willing to stay, fix, build, and be judged by results—not those who abandon platforms when personal ambitions are unmet and reappear as moral critics of the same system they once operated.

Nigeria needs sincerity, not symbolism. The future will not be secured by political cross-carpeting disguised as ideology. It will be secured by leaders who combine consistency with competence and who understand that credibility is earned through service, not claimed through reinvention.

Well-meaning Nigerians should therefore look beyond the language and examine the actors. Because a new party with old habits cannot deliver a new Nigeria.
