Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo’s declaration that he will deliver 2.5 million votes to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election has generated substantial political discussion.

The assertion has been a recurring theme in Governor Okpebholo’s political commentary, most notably re-emphasized during a high-profile interview on Channels Television.

The Core of Okpebholo’s Claim

“Already on the Streets”: Okpebholo has confidently dismissed skepticism regarding the target, stating that the political support is already secured on the ground. He has assured the public that the electorate will turn out en masse to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in 2027.

The “Residual Heat” of 2023: When questioned about the 2023 presidential election results—where Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won Edo State—Okpebholo attributed that outcome to internal friction and governance issues under the previous administration of Godwin Obaseki, rather than a lack of support for Tinubu. He argued that the current administration’s alignment with the federal government will completely reverse that dynamic.

Financial Allocations as a Driver: In his recent commentary, the governor cited the financial support and interventions the federal government under President Tinubu distributes to state governors as a key driver that will motivate Edo voters to back the president’s re-election bid.

Political Reactions
The declaration has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition, particularly within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and civil society groups, who have characterized the 2.5 million figure as mathematically unrealistic given historical voter turnout trends in Edo State.

Commentators have noted that the total number of registered voters in the state typically falls short of or sits close to that threshold, making a singular block delivery of 2.5 million votes an extremely ambitious electoral claim.

The pledge underscores early efforts by the Edo State APC leadership to solidify its alignment with the presidency ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

But be it as it may Governor Okpebholo talks and acts in accordance with his promise. He doesn’t fall within the dictates of the group of those who derive joy in loud talks that they’re certain will yield no positive results.

By 2027 the coast would be clear and the talk will breed the desired quantum of tale bit that would be visible for all and sundry to see and place their bet on. Time and condition would tell.
