The 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement which was formally unveiled on 14th February 2026, has been reneged upon by the Nigerian state and if urgent action is not taken “we are been pushed back to the trenches.”

At the Press Conference addressed by the Academic Staff Union of Union (ASUU) of Uniben, in Benin City on Thursday, the ASUU gave reasons for vexatious reasons for their grievances which included “distorted implementation of allowances; state governors refusal to comply; failure to inaugurate the implementation monitoring committee and unresolved financial obligations.”

Other reasons included “policy inconsistencies in education; unilateral transnational educational plans; compulsory enrollment in NERD; threat to scrap academic programmes; mismanagement in universities and land grabbing in Niger State.”

Based on these reasons the ASUU resolved and demanded to “condemn the partial and non-implementation of the salary component of the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement; ASUU berate the Edo, Ondo, and Delta States government for failing to implement the Agreement five months after the Federal Government’s directive and condemn the hijack and derailment of Nigeria’s research and development agenda by external agents and their local collaborators.”

Also it was demanded that “the Niger State Government and the Ministry of Education cease all actions against the land and property of FUT Minna; reject any attempt to arbitrarily scrap academic programmes in Nigerian universities; appeal to patriots and lovers of Nigeria to compel federal and local governments to fully implement the Agreement and resolve outstanding issues without further delay and warn that public universities face imminent paralysis if the government continues its old tactics of disrespecting collective bargaining and binding agreements.”
