Today, 8th May, 2026, The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, and The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, met with the leadership of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA), consisting of BOT members and Senior USOSA leaders led by President General Michael Magaji, and the National President of the FGC Kano Old Students Association (FGCKOSA), Shoyinka Shodunke, over the proposed land swap and concession arrangement at Federal Government College Kano.
During the over four -hour meeting, USOSA raised strong concerns about the commercialisation of Unity School assets, stakeholder consultation, threats to the legacy of Unity Schools, reduction of academic and recreational spaces, and possible security implications.
FGCKOSA also decried the exclusion of alumni from the process and formally offered to match the reported infrastructure proposal by a commercial enterprise as an alternative to the concession, while preserving the school’s land for future development.
USOSA demanded the immediate suspension of the concession plan, stressing that alumni associations have consistently delivered projects worth hundreds of millions of naira across Unity Schools without the need to commercialise school land.
In response, The Honourable Minister acknowledged the concerns but maintained support for the concession as part of its infrastructure renewal strategy. He appealed for the suspension of the planned 9th May 2026 awareness rally and the withdrawal of the legal action by FGCKOSA.
The Minister also thanked USOSA for the developmental and impactful role it has played in Unity Schools, particularly in helping to bridge infrastructure gaps caused by low funding over the past 20 years. He further promised to work with USOSA in the next phase of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives, starting with Kings College, where the alumni have expressed interest in taking over the management of the school under a PPP scheme. Their proposal is expected to be submitted to the Federal Executive Council in the coming weeks.
The Minister also presented a copy of the Ministry’s PPP guidelines as a guide for USOSA to review and develop a strong value proposition for the Federal Ministry of Education on PPP opportunities for Unity Schools across the country.
Even though discussions during the meeting were inconclusive, USOSA and FGC Kano OSA will continue to constructively engage the Ministry with a view to finding a lasting and mutually acceptable solution.
