President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun to resign from office and be replaced by Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Olatunji Disu.

A senior police officer confirmed the development and pleaded not to be mentioned, saying there were no clear reasons for the sacking of IGP Egbetokun.

There is an uneasy calm at the Force Headquarters following the news of the sacking of the Police top brass, as officers and personnel were seen discussing in low tones.

While official announcement is being awaited, information reveals that AIG Disu would soon be unveiled.

Olatunji Disu was born on April 13, 1966, and was decorated as AIG by the outgoing IGP Egbetokun.

He was also the former Commissioner of Police in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Police Force in Nigeria, the position previously held by Abba Kyari.

He also served as Principal Staff Officer to the then-acting Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

He’s a graduate of English Education from Lagos State University (LASU) and a holder of two master’s degrees, one in Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, and the other in Criminology, Security, and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University.

On February 6, 2026, AIG Disu assumed duty to succeed Margaret Ochalla at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex, Alagbon, Lagos state.

He had, upon assuming duty, promised to strengthen the operational and investigative capacity of the FCID annex at Alagbon.

Disu said he would inculcate a zero-tolerance approach to corruption and called on stakeholders to support the police in the fight against corruption.

While official confirmation is awaited, it was further gathered that IGP Kayode Egbetokun was forced to resign from office at the request of President Bola Tinubu.

It was reported that he was asked to throw in the towel during a meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presidential villa on Monday evening.

Egbetokun’s tenure was extended in 2023 by President Tinubu following an amendment to the Police Service Act that provides for a single four-year tenure for Inspectors General of Police.

As a result of the extension, the IGP is due to retire in 2027, despite complaints and protests from many quarters.
