Beyond Projects: Why trust sustains development in Edo State

Edo people know that progress is not measured by concrete alone. They have seen roads repaired, schools renovated, and hospitals expanded before. What stays with them is not only what was built, but how it was kept working.

Trust is different from infrastructure. You cannot award it by contract or unveil it with a ribbon. Yet it is what allows every other effort to succeed.

A mother trusts a school when she believes her child will learn, not just attend. A trader trusts a market when allocation is fair and sanitation is maintained. A patient trusts a hospital when equipment works, staff are attentive, and emergencies are handled with care. A commuter trusts a road not only because it is smooth, but because order makes movement predictable and safe.

Visible effort is important, and Edo people acknowledge it. Roads improve movement. Schools and hospitals bring relief. Markets restored with care renew confidence. These achievements are seen, discussed, and appreciated. But effort becomes enduring only when it is consistent, fair, and well organised.

Trust grows quietly. It is built when salaries arrive as expected, even more so on the thirteenth month. When rules apply evenly. When public explanations are clear and respectful. When citizens are treated not as spectators of governance, but as participants who deserve to understand where things are going, and above all when development is going on in all senatorial districts simultaneously, with no district left alone as was the case in recent and distant past.

People notice patterns. They notice balance. They notice when development touches different parts of the state and when attention is shared with care. They also notice when systems work the same way today as they did yesterday. Consistency reassures them more than announcements ever could.

Building infrastructure is necessary. Coordinating it gives it strength. But trust is what allows people to relax into progress instead of resisting it. It is what turns compliance into cooperation and patience into support.

Edo is at a moment where visible effort is meeting rising expectation. Direction is evident. What sustains this moment is clarity—clarity of purpose, clarity of process, and clarity of communication. When citizens understand not just what is being done, but why and how it will last, confidence deepens.

A state can build many projects in a short time. But trust is what allows those projects to stand long after the noise fades, after the cameras stop rolling. And when trust takes root, even modest effort carries great weight.

That is why trust remains the infrastructure government cannot buy—but can steadily earn.

Saintmoses Eromosele (SME),
Executive Director of ONEGHE SELE FOUNDATION, writes from his cassava farm in Ewu.
