The Edo State Government has demolished illegal structures and shanties identified as hideouts for suspected kidnappers along the Okpella–Okene Expressway, as part of sustained efforts to curb crime and improve security across the state and its border communities.
The affected structures, located around the Obu/Oguda/Bua Cement axis, were uncovered through intelligence reports and investigations as operational bases allegedly used by kidnappers. Findings indicated that the area served as a holding point where abducted victims were kept before ransoms were demanded and collected.
The axis has long been dreaded by residents and motorists, having gained notoriety as a haven for criminal activities. Previous efforts to dislodge the suspects reportedly proved unsuccessful, making the location a major security concern for the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
However, on Saturday at about 9:30 a.m., security agencies and relevant government officials successfully carried out the demolition of the illegal structures, restoring a sense of safety to the area.
The exercise was executed by the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency, under the supervision of Town Planning Officer, Williams Ovenseri, who led the removal of the shanties.
During the operation, the suspects allegedly resisted by blocking the Okpella–Okene Expressway at the Obu/Oguda/Bua Cement axis and reportedly attempted to use human shields. Security operatives, however, maintained control and ensured the successful completion of the exercise.
The operation was coordinated by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Benjamin Abang, DC Operations, Edo State Command, who led a combined team of police personnel and officers of the Nigerian Army. The exercise was concluded without any casualties or recorded incidents.
Following the demolition, the area, previously known for frequent kidnappings and attacks on motorists, has remained calm, with security agencies maintaining surveillance to prevent a resurgence of criminal activities.
The development represents a significant boost to the Okpebholo administration’s ongoing campaign against crime, reaffirming its commitment to the protection of lives and property in Edo State.
