Former President, World Medical Association(WMA) and Director General(DG) of the Dr. Osahon Enabulele Foundation (DOEF), Dr. Osahon Enabulele, has called for more funding of the Education sector to stir up growth and development among youths in the country.
Dr. Enabulele made the call at the final of the Dr. Osahon Enabulele Secondary Schools’ Edo South Senatorial District Debate held at Orokpota hall in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
He asserted that adequate funding of the Education sector was necessary to scale up development in the country through stimulation of creativity among youths for useful ventures.
The former WMA President noted with dismay the level of decadence in the society, prompting many to indulge in criminal activities to make instant wealth.
According to him, Education is a veritable platform for sustainable success. He advised youths to work hard and not to reckon with the saying in some quarters that Education was a scam.
He said “There is no short cut to success. The initiative of this debate series is to check poor direction being given to youths in the society. Some of them are beginning to think that Education is a scam, losing interest in some values, character traits and important ingredients for development especially Education.
“Many of the youths are beginning to think that there was no value in Education, thereby reducing brainstorming to find solutions to societal problems. Those they thought could not get somewhere were given political and traditional positions by virtue of instant wealth through illegitimate means, making them to think that Education was actually a scam.”
The former President of the WMA further maintained that he was impressed with what he had seen so far from students in the various local governments and urged government to commit more resources for the development of schools.
In his remarks, Proprietor of Gilgal Education Centre in Ovia South West, Mr Godson Ofure, who described the programme as inspiring, appreciated the Foundation for teaching youths to pursue their dreams through legitimate means. Some of the students who participated in the debate said that the programme had helped them to build their confidence and develop themselves.
Earlier, the students had engaged in a heated debate to support or oppose the notion: Social Media has a detrimental effect on the intellectual capacity and mental health of teenagers.
St Maria Gorretti Girls Grammar School came first in the debate, followed by Idia College who finished second while Saint Michael College came third. The debate is expected to hold in Edo North and Edo Central senatorial districts before the final which will feature the first two winners in each of the senatorial districts.
