The Niger State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to democratic governance, regulatory due process, and press freedom following recent developments concerning Badegi FM 90.1, a private radio station operating in the state.

Reiterating its commitment via a statement released by the State Ministry of Information and Strategy, endorsed by the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Hon. Binta Mamman, recalled that on Friday, August 1, 2025, “Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, during an expanded All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus Meeting in Minna, expressed concern over reports of unethical broadcasting practices and incitement allegedly associated with the station. A directive was issued calling for the suspension of the station’s operations pending further review.”

Going further, the statement stressed that “in response, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, who was present at the meeting, urged calm and emphasized that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) retains the constitutional authority to regulate broadcast licenses, including suspension or revocation decisions.

“To demonstrate its commitment to lawful procedure and media independence, the Niger State Government confirms that Badegi FM 90.1 has remained on air uninterrupted, pending a formal investigation by the NBC.

“The Ministry of Information and Strategy affirms that while the State Government prioritizes national peace, unity, and responsible journalism, it fully respects the rule of law and the regulatory powers vested in the NBC by Nigeria’s legal framework.”

According to the state government, “the Ministry has accordingly initiated the process of formally notifying the NBC of the allegations for appropriate regulatory action.

“All media practitioners operating in Niger State are encouraged to adhere strictly to the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and professional ethical standards.

“The Ministry plans to convene a stakeholder dialogue involving media executives, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and other actors to promote responsible journalism and build institutional trust.”

The Niger State Government assured the public of “its commitment to non-interference in matters that fall under the exclusive purview of regulatory bodies and calls on all stakeholders to respect lawful processes.

“The continued operation of Badegi FM 90.1 serves as clear evidence of the state’s respect for democratic values, regulatory integrity, and press freedom. The Ministry urges all parties to remain calm and await the outcome of the NBC’s investigation in the collective interest of peace, accountability, and national development.”
