Gateway Games 2024: Team Edo guns for the top position

As the battle for podium finish rages with thrills and spectacular performances at the ongoing National Sports Festival(NSF), tagged Gateway Games 2024, Team Edo has displaced Rivers and Ogun States to occupy the 4th position on the medals table with 176 medals. 

The heartbeat state team on Monday, continued with their impressive performance at the 22nd National Sports Festival, clinching more medals in Arm Wrestling, Kickboxing, Gymnastics and Para-Athletics in addition to the overwhelming results in the male Gymnastics on Sunday.

The breakdown of the official table released by the MOC on Monday evening shows that Edo State  now has 40 gold, 72 silver, and 64 bronze medals, totalling 176 medals.

Edo has posted overwhelming results and dominance in Gymnastics, Cricket, Weightlifting and Kickboxing where they harvested more medals. Kung Fu, Cycling and Taekwondo also contributed significantly to Team Edo’s medal haul as they remain a formidable contender for the top three finish.

On Monday, Deborah Ighawuanre won gold in the 100m and 200m Deaf  events while Chinonso Nnaji and Nathaniel Okpaise got silver each in the same event. Team Edo also won gold in the 400m deaf (women) and silver in the 1500m men.

In the Kickboxing event (70kg )low kick (female) Kate Peters earned gold for Edo ahead Lagos, Delta and Bayelsa States. In the -63.5kg (male) Emmanuel Bernard Eweh won gold for Edo ahead of Akwa Ibom, FCT and Ondo.

Team Edo made huge gains in Arm Wrestling event, winning 3 gold and 2 silver, courtesy of  Imois Abuovbo,(85kg), Dirisu Oseni (95kg) and Yakubu Olumide (85kg).

The competition continues as the National Sports Festival enters it’s final stages.
