The Coalition of Associations of Private Schools in Edo State (CAPS) has  extended its profound appreciation to Governor Monday Okpebolo; the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy

Emmanuel Iyamu; and the Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), for their swift and responsive intervention regarding the recent concerns over arbitrary tax increment  imposed on private schools.

Key into Shine Agenda CPS to Okpebholo pleads with reporters

In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Osagie Erhunmwunse, State Controller Association for Formidable Educational Development AFED; Dr Lemmy Russell, State Chairman,  National Association of Private Schools, NAPPS; Dr. Abdulwasiu, State Leader, Association of Model Islamic Schools, AMIS and Dr. Christy Egbune, State chairman, Association of Private School owners in Nigeria, APSON, and made available to newsmen, the group said they were  particularly grateful for the listening ear and timely mediation of the Commissioner for Education, whose support has led to a fair and considerate resolution in favour of members of their schools.

The statement reads in part, “we acknowledge the following key outcomes with gratitude: waiver of tax clearance for MBA and BECE Registration. The Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Education, has graciously

approved that private schools may proceed with the registration for the Middle Basic Assessment (MBA) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) without the prior requirement of tax clearance.

“Concession on payment terms. Members of our associations are now permitted to make a 10 percent of the already assessed tax liability while submitting financial expenses incurred to contest or seek a review of the assessments in order to be taxed on profit.

“Opportunity for tax assessment review. The Government has further demonstrated fairness by allowing private schools the opportunity to challenge and seek a review of the substantial tax assessments. This reflects a commendable openness to dialogue and inclusive governance.”

The coalition noted that this developments reaffirm the state government’s commitment to educational growth, equitable taxation, and the promotion of a supportive environment for private educational institutions.

They commended the visionary leadership of Governor Okpebolo, for demonstrating responsiveness, transparency, and a strong commitment to the education sector. And also  appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Education and the EIRS in addressing these pressing issues.

The Coalition reiterated their commitment in partnering with the government to uphold educational standards and contribute meaningfully to the development of Edo State.
