Niger Delta Sports Festival torch arrives Benin Monday morning

The much anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival looks certain to begin on April 1st with the unity torch to illuminate the festivity already moving from one state to the other among the nine participating states of the zone as Edo is set to receive it on Monday.

The  Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission(ESSC), Desmond Enabulele, is set to receive the torch on behalf of the state government.

According to the Executive Director, Sports Development and Operations, Mrs Sabina Chikere, athletes and coaches as well as members of staff of the ESSC are expected to assemble at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium at 8. 00 am to join the Chairman, Enabulele to welcome the torch bearers.

Chikere said that “the Executive Chairman on receiving the festival torch, will immediately lead the team of sports men and women to the Government House where they will hand it over to the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

The Festival Torch was lit in a colourful ceremony at the Samson Siasia Stadium on 21st of March 2025, in Yenagoa, and will be arriving in Benin on Monday March 24, 2025.

is a project funded by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to harness sports talents in the nine mandate states. The festival holds from April 1- 8 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. About 3000 athletes and 500 coaches are expected to take part in the festival.
