Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has asserted that since the inauguration of his administration it has “continued to prioritize the welfare of sportsmen and women, and give them the necessary encouragement to spur them to attaining greater heights in athletic competitions.”
According to him, “this has crystalized in sustaining the achievements Edo State has recorded in sporting activities, a trajectory that must be sustained.”
He made the assertion on Tuesday afternoon through the state deputy governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, who represented him at the unveiling of the newly signed players and technical crew of the Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens FC at the State Government House in Benin.
Okpebholo stated that the event “underscores the importance the present administration places on sports as a veritable vehicle of promoting unity and cohesion.
“The appointment of a substantive Head Coach for the Bendel Insurance Football Club, as well as Edo Queens Football Club, are testaments of government commitment to revitalize and reposition Bendel Insurance Football Club, and Edo Queens Football Club, for efficient service delivery.”
Going further, he submitted: “Let me place on record, the renewed commitment of the present administration to support Edo State Sports Commission’s vision of grooming talents, especially youths, in channeling their energies in sports development, as envisioned by the founding fathers of the defunct Bendel State, known for sports spectacular.
“The new Head Coach, Technical Director, and Team Manager, must work together seamlessly to improve on the performance of Bendel Insurance Football Club, and advance the club beyond premier league tournament.”
The Governor charged the new players to “shun indiscipline, football hooliganism; embrace team work at all times, to place them ahead of other football clubs,” adding “it is on record, the superlative performance of Edo Queens Football Club, as the defending champions in the Nigeria Women Football Premier League, has restored the confidence on Edo State as the home of sports.”
In his speech, Desmond Enabulele, Chairman of the State Sports Commission pointed out that “quite a considerable segment of Edo State people and stakeholders are beginning to feel the new positive energy been emplaced by His Excellency in the determination to reposition the state to its once glorious position nationally and internationally in sports. We’re definitely set to see a glorious rejuvenation of sports under your administration.”
