The village administrative system in Benin City is a complex network of roles and responsibilities. The Eroghaè, which consists of the Okaighele (the head of Ighele), the Ighele (who serve as protectors of the community), and the Ugiagbedion (the youth). Together, these groups work to maintain order and security in the village.

The roles and duties of these village administrators are varied and interconnected. Here are some details about the specific roles of each group:

Eroghaè: The Eroghaè are responsible for ensuring the smooth running of village affairs and enforcing community rules and regulations.

Okaighele: As the head of the Ighele group, the Okaighele acts as a leader and coordinator of the Ighele’s security functions.

Ighele: These individuals serve as the village’s protectors, maintaining security and protecting the village from external threats.

Additionally, the Ugiagbedion, also known as the Youth, have their own unique responsibilities within the village administrative system. Some of these include: assisting the Ighele in their security duties, such as patrolling the village at night to deter intruders and criminals.

Participating in community ceremonies and rituals, often performing specific roles or dances. Performing manual labor tasks, such as clearing bushes or digging ditches, to maintain the village’s infrastructure.

In conclusion, the village administrative system in Benin City is a complex and multifaceted system, with each group playing a vital role in maintaining the security, prosperity, and culture of the community.

From the Eroghaè to the Ighele to the Ugiagbedion, each group brings its own unique skills and responsibilities to the table, working together to uphold the traditions and customs of the village. While these roles may change and evolve over time, the importance of this communal structure remains central to the lives of the people in Benin City.

Governor Godwin Obaseki’s controversial decision to disband the Okaighele, a traditional group, in response to escalating cult-related violence has sparked mixed reactions. While some view it as necessary for restoring peace, myself, Chief (Dr.) Patrick Osagie Eholor criticize it due to alleged connections between key government officials belonging to notorious cult groups. This revelation underscores the intricate challenge of combating cultism, especially when it appears to have infiltrated the highest echelons of government.

Despite the governor’s crackdown on cultism, the unresolved allegations against his administration raise doubts about the sincerity of his efforts. Resolving this issue will require a thorough investigation into these alleged ties and a holistic approach to tackling the root causes of cult-related violence in the state.

Abolishing the Okaighele group is not enough to curb cultism in Benin City. If Mr. Governor must address this issue, he must first of all start from the root cause. Let’s not forget the popular saying that HE WHO COMES TO EQUITY MUST COME WITH CLEAN HANDS.
