25 Female students in Edo benefit from Women In Sports Support Initiative

As part of efforts to encourage girl child education and grassroots sports development in Edo State, a non-governmental organization Women In Sports Support Initiative’ has rewarded outstanding twenty five female students across Edo State.

The twenty-five beneficiaries from the initiative, drawn from the University of Benin(Uniben), Ambrose Alli University(AAU) Ekpoma and the University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School (UDSS), received a sum of one million naira (N1m) from the Women In Sports Support Initiative last weekend.

Out of the twenty-five beneficiaries,
sixteen (16) of the awardees were drawn from the Uniben, five from AAU were also beneficiaries.

The benefactor also extended the awards to the UDSS, capturing three students to cover a total of twenty-five(25 ) beneficiaries.

Some of the beneficiaries in the University of Benin include Joan Ebidou George-School of Medicine; Ogechi George – Faculty of Veterinary; Edeh Omoegbhe Ruth – Faculty of Education; Anie Ruth – Faculty of Social Sciences and Akpojotor Efeturi Ese –
Faculty of Management Sciences.
Others include Igedege Esther -School of Dentistry; Ogheovo Ighoaywoga -Basic Medical Sciences; Kororo Blessing – Ekenwan Campus; Victory Azubudi -Faculty of Agriculture; Ekenechukwu Florence – Faculty of Engineering; Peace Beedie –
Environmental Sciences; Agholor Ifeanyi Miriam -Faculty of Pharmacy; Ezenduka Adaku Janet – Faculty of Law; Oghenetega Choice – Faculty of Art and Ochei Ruth Monetemi – Faculty of Life Sciences

Speaking during the award ceremony at the University of Benin, the Coordinator of the Initiative, Mr. Baye Osagie Sylvester, expressed gratitude to the University of Benin and other stakeholders, including the sponsors who made the programme possible.

“We want to encourage our female students to combine sports with studies because there is a lot of benefit in it. This will be an annual event which gives us the opportunity to support female athletes,” he said.

According to Baye Osagie who commended the sponsors of the programme, the scholarships for Sports through the Women In Sports Support Initiative is first of its kind in the University of Benin.
